The threat and fulfillment of Ragnarok---the Twilight of the Gods and the destruction of the mortal world---was at the very heart of Mickey Zucker Reichert's The Last of the Renshai trilogy.
And what more is there to be said after the universe has come crashing down.
As Beyond Ragnarok, The Renshai Chronicles: Volume One proved, sometimes the end of the universe only signals a new beginning. For in the final battle that should have seen the fiery destruction of humankind, Colbey Calistinsson---son of the god Thor, and raise to become the ultimate Renshai warrior---did not play be Odin's rules, choosing to save Midgard even at the cost of Odin's life. Colbey's triumph was not, however, without its price, and now nearly three hundred years after the time of Ragnarok, humankind has been drawn into a new and possibly inescapably fatal trial.
The balance between Law and Chaos has long been maintained by the rulers of Béarn, but the death of the current king and the seeming lack of a suitable heir---along with the treachery of the prime minister---have enabled the elves to magically substitute one of their own on the throne. And, under the leadership of Dh'arlo'mé, the dark elves now seem certain to claim their long-desired vengeance on humankind. But when, despite all Dh'arlo'mé's attempts to prevent it, the small party which set out to find and bring back Griff, the last possible heir to the throne, Dh'arlo'mé realizes that even magic and murder combined will not be enough to overturn the balance between Law and Chaos.
Now Dh'arlo'mé's solution must hinge on Béarn's burden and treasure, the Staff of Law and the Staff of Chaos. These are the staves which are used to prove the worthiness of an heir to rule. However, they are far more than that. For within these plain pieces of wood dwell the essences of Law and Chaos, each eternally seeking its Champion, each striving to destroy the balance of Midgard in its own favor. But should either Law of Chaos actually triumph, it will indeed herald the end of humankind.
Lured into Law's power, Dh'arlo'mé seeks to seduce the mortals into championing Chaos, unaware that his rash action may well prove his own people's undoing as well. In truth, even the gods have reason to fear the destruction of the Balance.
With all the worlds teetering on the brink of a new and certainly final doom, it falls to Colbey Calistinsson, Keeper of the Balance, to select the correct Champion to pit against Dh'arlo'mé. If he chooses wisely, the Balance should reassert itself. Should he err, all life---both mortal and immortal---will come to an end. Yet even success will come at a high price. For the only way to insure that this danger can never arise again, is for both Champions and Staffs to be totally annihilated.
